Consumer Protection Act (COPRA)
1986 is an Act of the Parliament of India enacted in 1986 to protect the interests of consumers in India. It makes provision for the establishment of consumer councils and other authorities for the settlement of consumers' disputes and for matters connected therewith.
The consumer movements arose out of dissatisfaction of the consumers as many unfair and unethical practices were being indulged in by the sellers to get better profits in the markets. Initially there were no legal bases available to support the interest of the consumers against the exploitation in the market place. The consumer movements are a means through which various organisations and government's have made the people presume that it is their responsibility to stay aware while buying commodities .The consumer movements provide means through which the interest of the consumers can be protected and promoted.
